Wilkerson Dental Chair Pt.10

Work In Progress / 08 August 2021

The lowpoly and UVs are done!!! Well, at least for now. Most likely I'll make a final optimization pass at the end of it, collapsing unneccessary edges and whatnot. I also managed to get some test bakes done in Toolbag, and so far they've been turning out great! Next week is all about finalizing bakes and getting the Painter project set up. I'm also planning on finally getting the Twitch stream back up and running next Saturday (8PM CEST), starting with the texturing for this thing! I personally can't wait, see you all in the next update!

Hello there.

It's been a while since my latest update. Some stuff has happened here and there (not to mention the massive heatwave...geez). Nevertheless I've managed to get a slight bit of work done. I went back to ZBrush (yes, I know, back again) and made some of the details harder and more intense details in the sculpt. I got the highpoly decimated, brought it into Maya and got started on the retopology and UVs.  Despite being a bit of work left on that front I'm hoping that'll be done soon™ (whenever the heat decides to take a break).

Refinement, refinement, refinement. Yes, I did go back to ZBrush. Despite calling the highpoly "done" last week. I exported a decimated version of the chair and compared it to my original blockout which went great! There's a couple of adjustments that needs to be done with some extrusions and moving a couple of edges, but nothing too major. I did however go back to ZBrush to refine some of the details. Adding more seams and folds where it was justified. I also added in claws for the paws on the base of the chair, and added in some more welding lines. All in all I think it was completely worth it! I feel much more satisfied with the highpoly now and feel that it's actually where I'd be happy to bake it down. But more on that in the next update. Have a great week everyone and I'll see you there!

Wilkerson Dental Chair Pt.7

Work In Progress / 04 July 2021

Hi, yes, it's me. I'm still kicking around with this project. Anyhow, I've been taking a few weeks of break from this project as I was finishing up my first year at The Game Assembly's Game Art programme! It's been great fun so far and I'm looking forward to what the autumn will bring. But before that: SUMMER! Yes that's right, summer is here. I took 2 weeks of vacation to recharge my batteries and now I'm back in action!

I've spent the week wrapping up the highpoly to some great results. Did a bit of a dive into the new cloth brushes (will need further research for that...) as well as some wood sculpting. I found the reference to be a bit monotone with only painted metal and cloth. So I decided to switch it up, adding leather seat and back rest to the mix, along with a few wooden pieces here and there. (Speaking of wood sculpting, thanks Ivanna for that awesome tutorial!)

So what's next? Well, essentially I'm gonna get to work on the final game res asset. Adjusting my midpoly from before ZBrush where needed, and remake what's needed (cushions for example). After that it's on to UVs and then finally textures!

Down below you'll find some shots of the new detailed highpoly sculpt in ZBrush complete with a turntable. I'll see you next week, enjoy!

(Oh you made it all the way, great! Here's a small tease for the diorama. We had an assignment at TGA to sculpt a skull, I'll most likely take it further later and put it in a glass jar in the diorama. It also needs more variation for the teeth. Anyhow, bye for now!)

Wilkerson Dental Chair Pt.6

Work In Progress / 07 June 2021

So for the past 2 weeks it's been nothing but troubleshooting. Position issues in ZBrush but not when bringing the mesh back into Maya to check. Not to mention the Maya project got corrupted :(

Nevertheless I had backups of the files (always, ALWAYS backup Adam...) and could finally today get back to work. Hopefully this week will be more productive. See you in the next update!

Me when noticing my Maya scenes had all become corrupt:

This week has been quite eventful to say the least, and I feel like a lot of progress has been made on the project! The mesh is now inside ZBrush and I've started adding the hard surface details. Next up is most likely getting the lion paws for the feet looking nicely, and then it's time for the leather!

See you in the next update!

Finally got my midpoly finished! (Yes, late update I know. But I really wanted to get through the midpoly before this update :P) Time to bring it into ZBrush, polish aaaaaall them edges and sculpt some cloth! Gonna be lots of fun trying out what techniques work good. Any tips for a cloth sculpting newbie?

So yea, any cloth sculpt tips are welcome and most appriciated! See you next week! :)

Work In Progress / 08 May 2021

This week I've worked mostly on starting to get the blockout to a more midpoly stage. I also some got some material IDs blocked in :D Got a bit of work left but it should soon be ready for ZBrush! Can't wait for what the coming week will bring. See you all next time!

Wilkerson Dental Chair Pt.2

Work In Progress / 03 May 2021

It's been a week, and more!

For the past week or so I've been mostly struggling with the headrest and its mechanism. But today I finally figured it out! I also tweaked some of the proportions so now I'm feeling ready and able to move on to midpoly!

I also made a gif to demonstrate the mechanism.

Hopefully I'll be posting an update this weekend. On time ;)

Wilkerson Dental Chair Pt.1

Work In Progress / 28 April 2021

Hey everyone!

So recently I got into starting up a new project. I want to make a 1900s dentist office diorama, but first I'm making the centerpiece. I wanted to deviate with the chair from the concept and really challenge myself to make a more ornate chair (which kinda is a project in itself...so here we are). I chose to go with the Wilkerson Dental Chair. I got the blockout pretty much done, but it still needs some tweaking. Especially with figuring out the shapes on the back.

The rest of the diorama is based on a concept by Dai Nguyen (make sure to check out more of his awesome stuff!), and I can't wait to get to that! :) See you all in the next update! :)
