Making Of / 17 January 2019

A lot of progress was made today (Wohoo!). All remaining blockout elements were removed and replaced with more final assets (apart from the candle holders on the ground). A slight bit of tweaking was also done on the wood textures. Tomorrow will be all about those darn candle holders as well as more lighting.

Day 13 and both candles and chairs have been implemented! All that's left now are the banners, the fireplace, the floor tile material and getting the brick material to properly display, as well as fixing my pillars and the candleholders standing on the floor. (I do have some more props in mind I want to add but I do want to focus on the deadline from school which is on friday. The goal until then is to have the aforementioned props ready in a decently lit environment. A bit of work remaining, but I'll hopefully make it in time!

Today has been spent on creating a Brick Substance for the walls, as well as testing it out in engine. I'm not sure that I feel 100% satisfied with it but it'll work for now. After all, this whole process is a learning process for me :D Tomorrow will all be about a separate floor material as well as getting all the wall and floor modules in place. I will also increase the size of the room a bit to make it feel less closed in. (PS: Hopefully I'll also get some time to get the final candles in engine.)

Day 10 (Friday 11/1) was spend getting a good base mesh for the shield, which during day 11 (today, Sunday 13/1) had highpoly work done as well as texturing and getting it into engine. Work also continued on the candle which now has a first pass ready to be implemented in engine.

Today I've been starting making a candle for the chandeliers as well as some candle holders in the in the environment. Unfortunatly due to technical issues with my Cintiq I wasn't able to get as much work done as I wanted. Until I get that fixed, I'll be working on the shields instead as I do not plan to do any sculpting on them.

6 days since the last blog post...been a lot to do with coming home and school starting up again. Finally back on track though! Today has been quite a productive day. Managed to create my first two Smart Materials in Substance Painter and I'm quite happy with them! Furthermore, I also applied the textures to the chandelier and replaced the old ones from Substance, so it's finally finished with only materials made by me, using what noises and the like which are available in Substance Painter! Now to get the updated textured in engine and get to work on the candles. From here on out I'll be working more hours than the previous 3-4/day, so hopefully I'll progress the rest of this project faster.

Making Of / 03 January 2019

After some minor tweaking of the texture with adding soot to the chains, the candle holders and a bit of the wood, I thought the model was ready to get into Unreal. I do have -a lot- of tweaking with lighting in the scene but it works for now to give me the general mood and feel I'm after. I'm going back home tomorrow eve (finally!) and will thus not have time to work or upload anything as I'll be busy packing during the day :/ I will however resume work on saturday.

Making Of / 02 January 2019

So! I'm starting to feel finished with the chandelier and just need to add a few finishing touches before getting it into Unreal! (I'm so not going to finish the entire environment in time heh). Either way! I'll be continuing to work on the environment until it is finished! It's been fun thus far and has been going quite well (apart from the usual Maya crashes) and I hope that I will have a good end product in a not too distant future.

I hope all have had a wonderful start to the new year! I decided to take it slow today and just keep working on the UVs, which are now at a place I am quite happy with! I also tried hiding the UV seems a bit by adding a bit of height information to the wood texture to make the wood look more like it was assembled from parts. Might just add a trim instead but it worked alright for now. Of course the UVs will change a bit more once the actual candle holders are added but I think it looks decent for now! :)

Day #4 has all been about that chandelier, continuing to work towards the final asset. I did a basic highpoly which I'll be throwing into ZBrush, as well as making a base for the lowpoly which I will most likely remake due to it being too "blocky". Nevertheless, I did some quick UVs and threw on some basic textures in Substance Painter to get a feel of what I'm aiming for. With New Year's Eve tomorrow I most likely won't be posting anything. And I thus wish you all a Happy New Year. See you in 2019!
