Wish You Were Here Pt.1

Work In Progress / 12 October 2019

So there was a while since my last update, and a bit of stuff has happened since then:

While working on one of my environments and after recently playing A Way Out (amazing game by the way), I got inspired to take some of the pieces for the environment and make something smaller. It's far from finished (I need to make my own vegetation for example, current ones are example meshes from SpeedTree) and rework my ground texture. Apart from that I'm getting quite happy with the lighting. It's supposed to become a tribute to my dead relatives, a bench with their names on in their memory, the lightpost next to the bench represents that there's always a warmth in their memories, no matter how sad it may be that they're gone.

CCCP Bunker Light Pt. 9

Work In Progress / 31 August 2019

Did a bit more tweaking of the textures, as well as working on optimizing the mesh quite a bit. The right lamp is 10k tris, while the one on the left is 7k. Tomorrow will be all about setting up the background, lighting, final tweaks to the textures and final renders.

CCCP Bunker Light Pt. 8

Work In Progress / 29 August 2019

Got the lamp into Unreal today! (Or at least parts of it). Also adjusted some UVs and added more storytelling elements! Hopefully I'll have it done before the weekend is over :D

CCCP Bunker Light Pt. 7

Work In Progress / 28 August 2019

Today I got all the rebakes done (including sorting out baking errors) and reapplying all the materials! Now it's time for detailing (and all that storytelling) :D

CCCP Bunker Light Pt. 6

General / 25 August 2019

School start has been quite busy with a week filled with speedprops. I have however gotten some time over to work on my light (although not as much as I would've preferred). The bakes are mostly done (apart from some small issues I need to adress) and I can finally move on to the retexturing! Hopefully I'll finally be done with this project by the end of the week :D

Art Dump - Speedprops Week #1

General / 25 August 2019

With school starting up again I've gotten to do speedprops for the week. They still need a bit more polish and optimization however before getting uploaded to my portfolio. The themes were barrels, shields, food and finally rocks (first day was just administrative stuff so we didn't start with the props until Tuesday). But I'm quite happy with the overall results :)

CCCP Bunker Light Pt. 5

Work In Progress / 16 August 2019

Now that I'm back at my own home with my own computer after som well needed vacation I'm ready to keep working on the bunkerlamp, fixing up issues with it and whatnot. Spent a few hours today with adding some connecting pieces on the bottom as well as minor flaws. Also reduced the lowpoly tricount a bit, not quite done with that yet however (about 8-9k tris without the chain atm which I'll in the end bake down to planes) :)

CCCP Bunker Light Art Test

General / 21 July 2019

Deadline has come for this piece, it's been a (stressful) pleasure to work on this piece for the last 2 weeks. I'm quite happy with how it came out despite having a couple of flaws. I'll make sure to fix them before posting a full portfolio post with a complete breakdown of the project.

A bit of info regarding the project: This was an art test given to me by my friend Chris Kabeya as a challenge to create this CCCP Bunker Lamp in  approximatley 2 weeks with a heavy focus on texturing and staying true to reference without any technical limitations (apart from my deadline on the 21/7). It's been great fun and an awesome learning experience and I thank Chris for the oppertunity! Now then, onwards to fixing the flaws it has and getting it truly portfolio ready!

Softwares used:

  • Modeling: Autodesk Maya
  • Texturing: Substance Painter
  • Rendering: Marmoset Toolbag 3

CCCP Bunker Light Pt. 4

Work In Progress / 20 July 2019

The days since the last update have been really busy for me, yet a lot of work has been done so I'm feeling good! Today the majority of the last days' work was done: I got the UVs, baking and first pass of textures on! (And struggled a lot with some Maya bugs...) Nevertheless starting to feel under pressure it's been my jam these few days due to my 21/7 evening deadline it's a good kind of pressure and I'm more excited than ever as the texturing has begun and I'm quickly approaching the finish line!

I also took some time to get back into Marmoset Toolbag 3 to get up a first iteration of my presentation for the lamp as my current rig isn't that Unreal-friendly. Grabbed a couple of quick renders for your viewing pleasure :)

CCCP Bunker Light Pt. 3

Work In Progress / 16 July 2019

The last couple of days I've been doing cleanup, correcting mistakes based on feedback, as well as tried to make a smaller chain. Unfortunatly my first attempt didn't come out as well as I'd hoped so I'll have to take a step back and consider if I'll be adding the chains or not in the final model considering they are so tiny! Other than that I feel ready for starting on my game-res version!
